Stratford City is an ambitious regeneration project in the heart of Newham, which is attracting international businesses and visitors with a strong national and international brand.

This brief was to work students at Plashet school to develop a functional Maths project that helped to increase pupil engagement. The young people worked in small groups looking at the financial implications of running their own nail bar. The students developed their financial skills and scale drawing, with the help of an architect.

Class work was supplemented with visits to the Women’s Business Centre and Newham College of Further Education where the students were able to see a nail bar in action. The project culminated with a “Dragons Den” style competition of students presenting their potential nail bars.

Throughout the project the Year 9 Mathematics students utilised skills in ICT as well as developing personal learning and thinking skills. This project could be adapted for other year groups.
