Building Imagination

• This resource is based on the need to provide attractive publicity information to promote local education facilities
• Young people were asked to analyse the brief, prepare design visuals, take and edit photographs, and provide production and print specifications
• Suitable for KS3 and KS4 Business Studies, English, Media Studies, Art and photography and an inspiration for Creative and Media, ICT and Construction and Built Environment Diplomas

The project involved students working alongside teachers and designers in a design team situation where students were encouraged to think as young designers.

By working to live deadlines on a real brief, students learnt about the importance of understanding a brief and the needs of the client. This included analysing budgets, interpreting copy, developing branding, taking and choosing photographs to include in the design, as well as learning how to use programmes such as Indesign and Adobe Photoshop.

The project also provided professional development opportunities for teachers in how to run both out of school enrichment programmes and access external resources, such as the City Learning Centre, to enhance student learning.
